Andrew Davidson & Catherine Eadie

My Maternal 4th Great-Grandparents

Perthshire, taken in 2009

Andrew Davidson and Catherine Eadie are my 4th Great-Grandparents on my maternal grandmother's side of the family.  Their daughter, Ann Davidson (#37), married Peter Donald (#36) back in 1848.  I have not located any records on Andrew or Catherine prior to their marriage, therefore I am writing about them together.

According to the Scotland Select Marriages data base, Andrew Davidson (age 22) married Kathrine Eadie (approximately 20 years of age) on April 15, 1821 in Blackford, Perthshire Scotland. (FHL Film Number: 993481).  Andrew's parents were Andrew Davidson and Elizabeth Lawson and Catherine's parents were Charles Eadie and Ann Mailer. Together Andrew and Catherine had ten children between 1824 and 1844.

They can be traced in the Scotland Census from 1841 until their deaths:

1841 Scotland Census: Andrew (41, labourer) and Catherine (35?) living on the north side of the street in Auchterarder with Charles (20), Mary (7), Margaret (5), George (2) and a William Davidson, cotton weaver, age 45. For some reason Ann, my 3rd great-grandmother, is not listed with the family; she would have been 14 years old at the time of this census.

1851 Scotland Census: Andrew (51, Agricultural Labourer) and Catherine (49) living on Main St. Auchterarder, Perthshire with children: Charles (27), Jean (19), Margaret (16), George (13), Robert (8) and Janet (7)

1861 Scotland Census: Andrew (60) and Catherine (60) living with son William (mis-recorded as age 56; should be 26) and his wife Catherine (26) and their children: Ann (6), Andrew (4), Catherine (2), Magdaline K and Mary R (both age 10 months) in Auchterarder with a boarder.

On Nov 17 1868, at the age of 67 , Catherine died of an abdominal tumour; her husband Andrew was present.

The 1871 Census lists 71 year old Andrew Davidson, labourer, living on Main St. Auchterader with his daughter, Janet Davidson (27, power loom weaver and mother to James) and grandson James Hutcheson (4) and a lodger.

On May 12 1873, Andrew (widower of Catherine Eadie) age 74, died of Apopolexy. Parents were listed as Andrew Davidson, meal miller, and Elizabeth Lawson, both deceased.

52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks is accomplished!

OPR record of the births of the youngest 7 children and one grandson of Andrew and Catherine (1854)

"A people which takes no pride in the noble achievements of remote ancestors will never achieve anything worthy to be remembered with pride by remote descendants."

- Lord Thomas Babington Macaulay
