My Maternal 4th Great-Grandmother

Parish record of the baptism of Margaret Baillie, lawful daughter of John Baillie and Mary Moar.

Margaret Baillie was born in the borough of Birsay, Orkney Islands (a former Norse settlement) around September 15, 1771 (the date of her baptism) to John Baillie and Mary Moar (aka Marion).  Little is known of Margaret other than what is recorded in the parish records and the one census in which she is found.

On June 4, 1796, she married Thomas Stickler who was approximately 20 years her senior; they had 6 children, one of whom died in infancy. Their fourth child, Thomas Jr., became my 3rd great-grandfather on my maternal grandfather's side of the family.

Margaret appears in the 1841 Scotland census only, at the age of 65, occupation knitter, with her husband Thomas and their daughter Isabella (35) who never married. In 1841, the borough of Birsay's residents totaled 1634 of the total Orkney population of 30,434 at the time.

Parish record of the marriage of Thomas Stickler and Margaret Baillie (aka Bellie), 1796.
