Thomas Stickler, Sr.

Borough of Birsay, Orkney Scotland (Orkney Jar website)

My Maternal 4th Great-Grandfather

Parish record of Thomas Stickler's baptism/birth, father Hugh Stickler.

Thomas Stickler was born around November 21, 1753 in the borough of Birsay, Orkney Islands, Scotland.  His father was Hugh Stickler and his mother may have been Janet Smith (unconfirmed).

On June 4, 1796, Thomas married Margaret Baillie (also known as Bellie) in Birsay Orkney.  They had six children, including my 3rd great grandfather, Thomas Jr. (week #15).  Their first child died before his second birthday; the others appear to have survived into adulthood.

According to the 1841 Scotland Census, the only one in which they appear, Thomas was 85, born in Birsay, Orkney. Address at the time was listed as District: 5, Property No: 56 - Marwick, occupation: "independent", living with wife Margaret (65) and daughter Isabella (35). Margaret was recorded as a knitter and Isabella as a Straw Plaiter, Orkney.  It is not known when Thomas or Margaret died; Isabella can be found in the 1871 census (68, stocking knitter) born 1803 living alone at Midhouse, Birsay, Orkney.

Dear John. That's very interesting. Do you have any photos? I know it's gone now as I tried to find it when I visited London.
