Parish record of birth of Mary and Oswald Shearer, 1799
Mary Shearer and her twin brother, Oswald Shearer, were born on October 20, 1799 and baptised on October 23, 1799 in Dunnet, Caithness, Scotland. They were the youngest of seven children born to William Shearer and Christian Dunnet. Caithness
is located on the northern shore of mainland Scotland.
On May 27, 1830 - according to an extract of the Old Parochial Register in the Parish of Kirkwall, Orkney: "Thomas Stickler (week #15) and Mary Shearer, both of this parish, were matrimonially
contracted on 7th and married on 27th of May 1830, by the Reverend William Logie. Witnesses: John Heddle and Patrick Gorie."
Mary can be tracked every ten years in the Scottish Census from 1841 - 1871. Until his death in 1865, she was living with
her husband Thomas in diferent parts of the Orkney Islands. Together they had five children including Mary Shearer Stickler (week #10), my 2nd great-grandmother on my maternal grandfather's side of the family. In 1851, Mary's mother, Christian Shearer
(84) was residing with the family. For the last 20 or so years of her life, Mary lived in Kirkwall, Orkney.
Mary died at Catherine Place, Kirkwall, at age 81, on February 21, 1880. On her death certificate, she was lised as a pauper, widow
of Thomas Stickler. Her son-in-law, John Heddle, was present; he and wife, Mary Shearer Stickler lived at 14 Catherine Place at the time, so it is likely that Mary lived with them in her last few years of life.
