My Paternal Great-Grandmother

Sarah Moseley and John Henry Clarke - wedding photo December 25, 1899.

Sarah Moseley, the mother of my paternal grandmother, Alice (see week 2), was born on February 22, 1877 in Wolstanton, Staffordshire, England.  She was the second of six children born to Daniel Moseley and Harriet Minshall.  Daniel was a coalminer and then a farmer most of his life.

On Christmas Day 1899, Sarah married John Henry Clarke in the parish church of St. Mary Magdalene in the county of Cheshire, England.  Together they had ten children over the next 12 years, including a set of twin girls. Unfortunately, three of their male childen died in early infancy from natural causes.

Sadly, Sarah did not live a long life; she died at the age of 43 from femoral thrombosis and pyaemia (blood poisoning) in  a Manchester infirmary.  She left seven children between the ages of 6 and 18 years of age to be cared for by their father, who only survived her by eighteen months.  Sarah is buried in an unmarked grave at Christ Church in Alsager, Cheshire.

Dear John. That's very interesting. Do you have any photos? I know it's gone now as I tried to find it when I visited London.
